Prevention through Exercise: AOK Bayern Relies on Virtual Reality from CAT PRODUCTION

In an increasingly technological world, where movement is often limited by sedentary activities and screen time, awareness of regular physical activity is increasingly fading into the background. In this context, innovative approaches, such as the use of virtual reality (VR), are opening up entirely new possibilities to make it clear to everyone how important it would be to integrate regular exercise into everyday life for their own health. This is the simplest way to take preventive action against health problems and, moreover, is available without a prescription.

Virtual Reality as the Key to Effective Knowledge Transfer

Studies show that knowledge transfer in virtual worlds can be more effective, convincing and sustainable than through conventional methods. The use of VR glasses to promote exercise and prevent disease could therefore be an important component in relieving the burden on the healthcare system in the medium and long term by preventing avoidable diseases of civilization through preventive measures. Through the immersive and interactive experiences that VR offers, people can be motivated and entertained to engage in physical activity.

The Successful VR Project “Wunderpille Bewegung” is the Forerunner

Following the very successful VR project “Wunderpille Bewegung” by KERN (Competence Center for Nutrition), a division of the Bavarian Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry, AOK Bayern has also jumped on the bandwagon and commissioned CAT PRODUCTION GmbH to design and implement an interactive VR glasses application on the subject of exercise. In a large park, where countless recreational athletes from breakdancers to joggers move with great fun, there is first of all a general introduction to the preventive character of regular exercise.

Virtual Journey through the Human Body

Arriving in an amphitheater, there is the possibility to start a journey to these organs in the body via sculptures that embody the brain, heart, bones, lungs and muscles.

There, it is explained for each organ what positive effect regular exercise has for this organ.

Application in Company Health Management

AOK Bayern offers this application to companies that it supports as part of company health management. For this purpose, up to 8 cases with 2 VR glasses each are available for loan. The application is designed in such a way that no explanation is required to be able to immerse oneself in the virtual worlds. Not even a controller is necessary to control the virtual journey. Knowledge is imparted sustainably with maximum enjoyment. Included are flights through the blood vessels and also a visit to a beating heart chamber. All that is needed is a swivel chair that ensures that you can orient yourself safely in all directions.

Long-term Impact and Future Prospects

The application is intended to convincingly convey how important regular exercise is for a long and healthy life. The many different athletes in the virtual park show that exercise is not just jogging and going to the gym. They should encourage you to find your own way to personal fitness. In the end, it is important that it is fun and that the social aspect is not neglected. Sport in a group is more fun for many than working off a regular workload on their own. It is important to prevent quitting immediately after starting.

If studies confirm the success of this application, further preventive VR applications on topics such as nutrition and mental health will follow.

Overall, the integration of VR technology in the field of health promotion has the potential to convincingly convey how easy it would be to maintain one’s health. By creating engaging and motivating virtual environments, people of all ages can be inspired to actively engage in order to lead a healthy lifestyle.
