Virtual reality (VR) in medicine

We recreate human anatomy in 3D and invite consumers to take a journey through their “own” bodies using VR glasses and other media.

Virtual reality will play an increasingly important role in medicine in the future. One example of this is a federally funded research project in which a virtual surgical trainer with haptic feedback is being developed.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the University of Bremen, Chemnitz University of Technology, FAKT Software GmbH, Haption GmbH, and YOUSE GmbH. For example, it is possible to practice milling the hip socket virtually before inserting an artificial hip (implant).

For haptic feedback, lightweight robots familiar from industrial production are being reprogrammed, among other things. In order to come as close as possible to visual reality, precise 3D models are necessary, such as those developed by CAT PRODUCTION for years, which can perfectly simulate a patient undergoing surgery.

“Virtual reality combined with robotics is the new way forward in medical training,” says Johannes P.G. Atze, Managing Director of CAT PRODUCTION GmbH / CAT MEDIC. He adds: “These new technologies are ideal for practicing complex operations without having to do so on patients.”

Simulation of operations using virtual reality

Together with the University of Bremen, Chemnitz University of Technology, and FAKT Software GmbH, CAT MEDIC is working on an application for simulating operations using virtual reality. The milling process on the hip socket can be practiced virtually before inserting an artificial hip (implant).

Virtual reality will become indispensable in medicine in the future and will conquer all areas of medicine.
